Thursday 21st March Press conference


 The invitation for the press breakfast has been accepted by Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor, Hon. Helena Dalli, Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties in Malta and Martin Bugelli, Head of the EU Representation in Malta.


In her statement, Minister Dalli called upon the Art. 8 of European Convention of Human Rights, which puts down the basic principles of privacy and expressed hopes for the CONSENT project results to be a valuable contribution to the European legislation that provides for the protection of individuals against the misuse of their personal data.

Mr Bugelli has stressed the importance of the state's role in ensuring that people's data are treated with respect.

Mr Hustinx has addressed the issues of consent, data protection and privacy and called upon the importance of proportionality when it comes to the clash of various legitimate interests – especially between the freedom of speech and the right to privacy. He sees the notion of consent as a key in the matter of future of online privacy. Mr Hustinx further stressed the EU being a community based on values and principles, whose role in the online world is to build trust in the area of digital space.
